چکیده

Models are generally used by scientists to obtain predictions and to provide explanations about phenomena. Their predictive and explanatory power is usually thought of as depending on their representative power: a model is a device standing for a target system in virtue of some relationship between its features and features of the system. This representational relationship enables scientists to draw inferences and to obtain information concerning the target system by reasoning with and in some cases literally manipulating the model. It is still not clear, though, in virtue of which features models allow such inferences to be drawn. Some philosophers have argued that appealing to isomorphism between models and target systems is not su cient to explain how models are used by cognitive agents, in practice, to represent the systems they study. The fact that the structure of theories seems to adequately capture the "structure" of the world is a genuine philosophical problem roughly, the problem of the use of mathematics in science but it does not solve the problem of how scientists use representing devices to draw inferences about the systems they study. Examining this problem does not commit anyone to any particular conception of the structure of scienti c theories. When it comes to representation, one has to pay attention to the kind of cognitive operations and sometimes to the concrete manipulations scientists perform when they learn, develop and

The Representation of Social Actors in Top Notch Textbook Series: A critical discourse analysis perspective

Abstract This study aimed to investigate how English language teaching textbooks portrayed male and female social actors according to their social roles and gender identities. To examine the linguistic representation of male and female social actors and construction of gender identities in ELT textbooks, Top Notch series was selected. To do so, attempts were made to analyze the series in terms ...

A Joint Semantic Vector Representation Model for Text Clustering and Classification

Text clustering and classification are two main tasks of text mining. Feature selection plays the key role in the quality of the clustering and classification results. Although word-based features such as term frequency-inverse document frequency (TF-IDF) vectors have been widely used in different applications, their shortcoming in capturing semantic concepts of text motivated researches to use...

A Novel Fuzzy and Artificial Neural Network Representation of Overcurrent Relay Characteristics

Accurate models of Overcurrent (OC) with inverse time relay characteristics play an important role for coordination of power system protection schemes. This paper proposes a new method for modeling OC relays curves. The model is based on fuzzy logic and artificial neural networks. The feed forward multilayer perceptron neural network is used to calculate operating times of OC relays for various...

The Representation of Social Actors In Interchange Third Edition Series: A Critical Discourse Analysis

This study takes a critical discourse analysis approach to investigate the linguistic representation of male and female social actors and construction of gender identities in the Interchange Third Edition. The analytical models used are van Leeuwen's (1996) framework and Halliday's transitivity model (Halliday & Matthiessen, 2004). The findings of this study indicated a differential representat...
